Technology saves my butt on a consistent basis.
I’ve been consistently misplacing things since I was a child. While this isn’t a diagnosed disability, it’s a problem. Whenever I walk around my apartment, I set down whatever is in my hand to pick up something else! So, if my phone is in my hand and I need to pick up my water bottle, I put my phone down and pick up the water bottle. TERRIBLE HABIT!
ENTER ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY.
This is a tile.
It’s an amazing, simple piece of technology that (simply put) is a life-saver. It uses an app and Bluetooth technology to help me find all of my important things. When I press the corner of that little white square, it makes my phone ring (even when it’s on silent)! It also works the other way around – when I press the app, the tile rings helping me to find my keys!
(I have no affiliation with this product. This is just a useful tool that I wanted to share!)
But wait, there’s more!
Tile has been expanding beyond the keychain business. After a shopping trip this weekend, I learned that a number of purses and wallets are being sold with tiles in them! What a way to keep track of your wallet! They’re now being made like credit cards that can easily be stored in virtually anything. As long as your tile is within the range of your phone’s Bluetooth signal, you’re good to go!
So… why should I care?
You may ask, “Why is this important? Why do I care that some lady sets down her keys and phone in random places around her house?”
This product is important for several reasons.
- If you have a million things going on and finding your phone and/or keys is a pain, this is an awesome, cost-effective solution.
- If you care about assistive technology accessibility, the tile is a big deal.
Assistive technology is in our everyday lives.
The more I work with technology, the more I realize how much I use it to help me on a daily basis, and how helpful it is to the “average Joe.” While AT is technology used to help individuals with disabilities, some of these tools are also helpful for people without disabilities. The technology boom has made assistive technology readily available for those that need them and those that want them. Most of us don’t even realize when we’re using assistive technology tools! To me, this means that assistive tech is becoming more mainstream, and that’s a great thing.
How can tile be used as assistive technology?
The tile can be used in many ways. The most obvious can be see with people executive function troubles. Personally, I utilize almost every organizational tool at my disposal – calendars, reminders, to-do lists, etc. This is another tool just like that! It takes some of the load off of your mind. Let technology do the work.
